The City Goes Green for Wicked

San Francisco painted the town green to welcome the musical hit phenonmenon Wicked back home where it made its world premiere in 2003. The City's iconic monuments turned green to celebrate the open-ended engagement of the new San Francisco company. The show began performances on January 27 at The Orpheum Theatre.

The Greening will continue at San Francisco City Hall, Coit Tower, the Ferry Building and he War Memorial Veterans Building through midnight Friday, February 6, marking Wicked's official opening night.

Historic City Hall was captured from a vantage point off of Van Ness Avenue. The magnificent Beaux-Arts granite and marble structure, which was completed in 1915, spans two full city blocks and is centered by the fifth largest dome in the world,
14 inches higher than the United States Capitol.

San Francisco's enduring 1898-era Ferry Building was shot from the dock, looking back towards Market Street. Since its renovation in 2003, the Ferry Building has anchored the City’s bustling waterfront with its upscale marketplace, office building, re-dedicated ferry terminal, and San Francisco’s largest twice weekly farmer’s market.

The 210-foot tall Art Deco Coit Tower atop Telegraph Hill is viewed here from nearby Russian Hill. Built in 1933, the tower's design was intended to resemble a fire hose nozzle and was funded by philanthropist and fire fighter devotee, Lillie Hitchcok Coit.

Proposed in 1918 as part of a cultural center to include a Symphony hall, Opera House and Art Museum, it was not completed until 1932. The four-story French Renaissance style structure is home to the Performing Arts Library and Museum, the majestic Green Room and exterior loggia, and the 916-seat Herbst Theatre where on June 26, 1945 the United Nations Charter was signed.
